Message from the Executive Director

Soon, the Minnesota State Arts Board will be conducting a statewide needs assessment to help determine how Minnesota residents currently participate in the arts, the degree to which they perceive the arts to be an asset in their lives or communities, and if a gap exists between residents' current connection with the arts and what they wish or believe that connection should be. The primary method of gathering information will be a survey that anyone can fill out, either online or on paper. In the next few weeks, we will be sending you a link to the survey. (We will also be delighted to mail you a hard copy on request.) As one of the 11 regional arts councils that partner with the State Arts Board in providing grants and services to Minnesota arts organizations, we are eager for the Arts Board to have the broadest possible representation of perspectives and ideas. I strongly encourage you to respond to the survey and to similarly encourage your colleagues, board, staff and audience members, and anyone else to do the same.

I also want to bring a wonderful new publication to your attention. Art and Upheaval: Artists on the World's Frontlines by William Cleveland is a compilation of stories about citizen artists who successfully rebuild the social infrastructure of six communities in various parts of the world. Bill is also the author of Art in Other Places, a seminal work on the power of community art, and he is a former Twin Cities resident. More information about "Art and Upheaval" is available here.
